We have a new home! Our Director, Prof Simon McKirdy, was instrumental in the federal government’s decision last week to dedicate 25 million dollars toward the construction of the new Harry Butler Environmental Education Centre. The building on Murdoch University’s Perth campus will not only house the Institute and collaborative lab space, its entire first floor will also feature an interactive public museum. Plans for upper floors include architect designed meeting spaces to foster strong relationships within the University and the greater Murdoch Health & Knowledge Precinct.
Museum space on the first floor will be freely open to the public. Exhibits on sustainability and Western Australia’s natural environment look to be hands-on and encourage guests to engage with both digital media and playful displays. Making conservation and Australia’s natural wealth accessible to the people is a continuation of Harry Butler’s legacy. We can’t wait to share our plans with you.
The Harry Butler Environmental Education Centre will also be supported by Chevron and Murdoch University. Through emphasis on public engagement and bringing together diverse groups to a common goal, HBI’s place as a hub for intersections of industry, academia, and the public sphere is cemented by this development.
