As a research officer, Cameron McMains brings their expertise in data analysis and statistics to the scientific team at the Harry Butler Institute. Cameron also created and maintains the HBI website and blog. Their experience in identifying and reporting meaningful trends from data, combined with understanding of coding and software design, and an academic background in ecology helps HBI researchers efficiently design and interpret scientific studies.

The Harry Butler Institute also sponsors Cameron’s PhD candidature in collaboration with the Western Australia Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development – Fisheries. Cameron’s thesis aims to determine the biosecurity context of anthropogenic marine debris, such as marine plastic and derelict fishing gear, in the Indian Ocean.
