Prof Ladislav (Laco) Mucina, Iluka Chair

Professor Ladislav Mucina serves as the Iluka Chair at the Harry Butler Institute. In this capacity, he offers his wealth of knowledge on biodiversity, conservation, and restoration to our research and activities. Prof Laco also supervises research students and engages with education and outreach at the Institute and for the wider Murdoch University community.

Professor Chad Hewitt, Director of CB

Professor Chad Hewitt has worked across academic, government and research sectors. His previous academic roles include Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) at Central Queensland University, Director of the National Centre for Marine Conservation and Resource Sustainability at the University of Tasmania Australian Maritime College; and Head of School of Science, Dean of Science at the University of Waikato.

Professor Trish Fleming, Director of CES

Professor Trish Fleming is the Director of the Centre for Environment and Sustainability. She prefers research and collaboration that have direct applications to real-life problems. Therefore, much of her work has focused on practical topics related to wildlife conservation and animal welfare with a particular emphasis on the physiology and behaviour of Australian fauna.

Professor Alan Lymbery, Director of CSAE

Professor Alan Lymbery is the Director of the Centre for Sustainable Aquatic Ecosystems. His research bridges parasitology, evolutionary biology, and genetics to bring findings relevant to biodiversity conservation, with a particular regional focus on local Western Australian species. Prof Lymbery’s recent projects include describing the ecosystem services provided by freshwater mussels and investigating treatment and control options for parasites and bacteria affecting yellowtail kingfish. He is particularly interested in how climate change will affect fish behaviour, and therefore the transmission of disease.

Professor Simon McKirdy, Director of HBI

Professor Simon McKirdy has extensive experience covering corporate leadership, research management, policy development and the management of biosecurity operations within the government and private sectors. He has international expertise in biosecurity and, in particular, plant biosecurity. He completed his PhD in Plant Pathology and the University of Western Australia.

Prof Marnie Campbell, Chair

Professor Marnie Campbellā€™s career has maintained a balance between active science research and the interface with management, with the aim of translating science into effective policy and determining how this can direct science. Her previous academic roles include Director of the Environment Research Institute at the University of Waikato; Professorial Chair of Ecological Security at Central Queensland University, where she also held a Smart Futures Mid-Career Fellowship; and tenured Associates Professor and Head of Department (Conservation and Ecology) at the University of Tasmania.
